Description

The Aiptasia Eating Filefish, *Acreichthys tomentosus*, is a fascinating and often sought-after addition to the reef aquarium, primarily for its natural inclination to consume nuisance Aiptasia anemones. This small, cryptic fish possesses a unique, elongated body shape and a rough, file-like skin texture, giving it its common name. Its coloration is highly variable, ranging from mottled browns and greens to yellows and whites, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.

A minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons is recommended for the Aiptasia Eating Filefish. Provide ample live rock with plenty of crevices and hiding places, as this species is naturally shy and benefits from areas to retreat. While their primary appeal is their appetite for Aiptasia, they are not guaranteed to eradicate all infestations and may occasionally nip at other sessile invertebrates, including some corals. Therefore, caution is advised when introducing them to a mixed reef environment, especially with prized or delicate corals.

In addition to Aiptasia, the Aiptasia Eating Filefish should be offered a varied diet of frozen and live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped marine meaty foods. They may also graze on algae. In the aquarium, they typically reach a size of around 3-4 inches. Sexing is difficult, and captive breeding is not common. They are generally peaceful towards other fish but can be territorial with conspecifics or other filefish.
