Description

The Black Blenny (Atrosalarias fuscus) is a hardy and personable algae-grazer ideal for reef tanks. It sports a velvety black to dark brown body with subtle fin markings and a characteristic “perched” swimming style typical of blennies. Known for its quirky personality and curious behavior, it often becomes a favorite among hobbyists.

This blenny spends most of its day perched on rocks or grazing on microalgae. It’s an excellent addition for natural algae control and adds charm and character to reef systems.

Care Requirements

Provide a tank with ample live rock for grazing and shelter. A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, but larger tanks reduce territorial disputes if multiple bottom-dwelling species are present. They prefer stable reef conditions with moderate flow and well-established algae growth.

Avoid housing with similarly shaped blennies or aggressive species that may bully smaller fish.

Diet & Feeding

While the Black Blenny primarily consumes microalgae in the tank, supplemental feeding is important once natural algae is depleted. Offer:

  • Spirulina-based flakes or pellets
  • Dried seaweed (nori)
  • Blanched spinach or other vegetable matter
  • Occasional mysis or brine shrimp for variety

Feeding 1–2 times daily supports color and health.
