Description

The Black Tang, *Zebrasoma rostratum*, is a highly prized and elegant surgeonfish known for its striking, solid black coloration. This deep, velvety black covers its entire body, including its fins, creating a dramatic and sophisticated presence in any marine aquarium. Its elongated snout and graceful swimming motion further enhance its appeal.

A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for the Black Tang due to its active swimming nature and potential adult size. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species is considered to have advanced care requirements. It thrives in a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. While generally peaceful with other fish, it can be territorial towards other tangs, especially those of similar shape or size.

In the aquarium, the Black Tang is primarily a herbivore and requires a diet rich in marine algae. Offer a variety of high-quality marine flake food, pellet food, and frozen foods supplemented with dried seaweed or algae sheets attached to a rock or clip. Providing ample grazing opportunities is crucial for their health and well-being. They typically reach a maximum size of around 8 inches in captivity. Due to their advanced care needs, including susceptibility to ich and the need for a large, stable environment, the Black Tang is best suited for experienced aquarists.
