The Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) is a true showstopper—saturated cobalt body with a fine maze pattern, canary-yellow tail, and that iconic sapphire-and-gold “mask.” Juveniles display bold, circular bands that transition into the intricate adult lattice as they mature, so you’ll enjoy a dramatic color journey over time.
Confident and curious, this semi-aggressive centerpiece loves to cruise open swim lanes and inspect rockwork, flashing iridescence as it turns. Reaching about 14–15 inches, it makes an instant statement in a large display and pairs best with other robust tankmates. Plan 220+ gallons with substantial, mature live rock for grazing and shelter. While not considered reef-safe (it may sample fleshy corals and clams), it’s exceptional in FOWLR or thoughtfully curated mixed systems where its regal presence can shine.
A Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) does best on a varied, sponge-rich omnivore diet. Make angelfish formulas that include marine sponge the staple, then rotate in finely chopped meaty foods (mysis, shrimp, clam, squid, occasional krill), plus plant matter like nori and spirulina to balance nutrition. Offer high-quality marine pellets that it readily accepts, and soak foods with vitamins (and garlic only as an appetite aid) to support immunity and coloration.
