The Cortez Angelfish, *Holacanthus clarionensis*, is a stunning and highly sought-after angelfish known for its vibrant orange-yellow body and striking blue accents. Juveniles display a series of iridescent blue vertical bars that fade as they mature, eventually developing the solid, brilliant coloration of the adult.
A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for the Cortez Angelfish to provide ample swimming space and a stable environment. A well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places is essential. While generally considered more reef-safe than some other large angelfish species, there is still a risk of them nipping at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles, especially as they mature. Therefore, they are best suited for a fish-only or FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquarium.
Like other angelfish, the Cortez Angelfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals are born female and can change to male later in life. Breeding in captivity is extremely difficult. There are no readily distinguishable external differences between males and females.
The diet of the Cortez Angelfish should be varied and include high-quality angelfish preparations, Spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. Offering a diverse diet will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health. In a home aquarium, they can reach a size of up to 10 inches.
