The Emperor Angelfish, *Pomacanthus imperator*, is a truly majestic and highly sought-after marine angelfish, renowned for its dramatic color transformation from juvenile to adult. Juveniles display a striking pattern of concentric white and blue rings on a dark blue to black body, while adults boast vibrant yellow and blue horizontal stripes, a dark blue face with a white mask, and a trailing dorsal fin.
A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for an adult Emperor Angelfish, providing ample swimming space and plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. While generally peaceful towards tankmates, they can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish. They are not considered reef safe as they are known to nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles.
The Emperor Angelfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning all are born female and can change to male later in life. There are no readily distinguishable external differences between males and females. Their diet should consist of a variety of foods including Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods.
