Description

The Filamented Flasher Wrasse, *Paracheilinus filamentosus*, is a vibrant and active addition to the reef aquarium. This species is known for the stunning displays of color and fin extensions the males exhibit, particularly during courtship rituals, earning them the “flasher” moniker. Their body is typically adorned with iridescent blues, reds, and yellows, with elongated dorsal and anal fins that become more pronounced during these flashing events.

A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for the Filamented Flasher Wrasse. They are best kept in a mature reef aquarium with plenty of live rock providing hiding places and foraging opportunities. While generally peaceful, males can be territorial towards other male flasher wrasses, so it’s best to keep only one male per tank unless the aquarium is very large. They are compatible with a wide variety of other peaceful reef inhabitants.

In the aquarium, the Filamented Flasher Wrasse will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality marine flake food, pellet food, frozen mysis shrimp, and enriched brine shrimp. They are active swimmers and appreciate multiple feedings throughout the day. They typically reach a maximum size of around 3 inches. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, they are considered to have an intermediate care level, requiring stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
