Description

The Firefish Goby, *Nemateleotris magnifica*, is a captivating and popular choice for reef aquariums due to its vibrant coloration and peaceful demeanor. Its elongated body is a striking combination of white or pale yellow on the anterior, transitioning to a brilliant red or orange on the posterior, with a distinctive purple or black stripe running from the eye to the tip of the first dorsal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are often edged in black or purple, adding to its visual appeal.

A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a single Firefish Goby, with larger tanks needed for groups. They thrive in aquariums with plenty of live rock and sand substrate, providing ample hiding places and areas for burrowing. While generally peaceful, they can be territorial with conspecifics unless kept in a sufficiently large tank with multiple hiding spots. They are excellent reef inhabitants and will not harm corals or invertebrates.

Firefish Gobies are planktivores and will readily accept a varied diet of small meaty foods. Offer a mix of high-quality flake food, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other small marine-based preparations. Feed small amounts multiple times a day. They are known jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. While breeding in captivity is possible, it is not commonly achieved by hobbyists. There are no readily apparent visual differences between males and females.
