Description

The French Angelfish, *Pomacanthus paru*, is a striking and large angelfish species that undergoes a dramatic color transformation from juvenile to adult. Juveniles are black with three bright yellow vertical bands, while adults are dark gray to black with yellow-edged scales, a yellow bar behind the eye, and yellow pectoral fins.

A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for an adult French Angelfish due to its potential size and active nature. The tank should include ample live rock for grazing and hiding places. While beautiful, the French Angelfish is not considered reef safe as it is known to nip at stony and soft corals, as well as clam mantles.

Distinguishing between male and female French Angelfish is difficult, and they are not typically bred in captivity. Their diet should consist of a variety of foods including Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. They can reach up to 16 inches in length in a home aquarium.
