The Gem Tang, *Zebrasoma gemmatum*, is a highly sought-after and visually stunning surgeonfish, prized for its striking coloration and graceful swimming. Its body is a deep, rich brown to black, adorned with numerous bright white to yellow spots that cover its entire body and fins, giving it a jewel-like appearance. The tail is typically a vibrant yellow.
A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate its active nature. A mature aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing on algae is essential for its health and well-being. While generally peaceful with most tank mates, it can be territorial towards other tangs, especially those of similar shape or size. Introducing it as the last fish in the aquarium can help minimize aggression.
The Gem Tang is a herbivore and requires a diet rich in marine algae. Offer a variety of foods including high-quality marine flake and pellet foods, dried seaweed (nori) tied to a rock or clip, and occasional offerings of mysis shrimp or other meaty foods to supplement its diet. Providing a diverse diet will help maintain its vibrant coloration and overall health.
Like other tangs, the Gem Tang is susceptible to marine ich and other parasitic diseases. Maintaining excellent water quality through regular water changes and proper filtration is crucial for preventing illness. It is not possible to distinguish males from females visually, and breeding in a home aquarium is extremely rare.
