Description

The Green Mandarin, *Synchiropus splendidus*, is a captivating and highly sought-after fish known for its vibrant, intricate patterns of blue, orange, and green. Its body is elongated and flattened, with large, fan-like pectoral fins that it uses to “walk” along the substrate. Unlike many fish, it lacks scales, instead having a thick, protective mucus coating.

A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a single Green Mandarin, with larger tanks preferred to support a robust population of copepods, their primary food source. A mature aquarium with ample live rock and a deep sand bed is essential to provide grazing areas and hiding places. Green Mandarins are peaceful and should not be housed with aggressive tank mates that will outcompete them for food. They are not considered reef safe as they may pick at small invertebrates, though this is less common than with some other species.

Distinguishing between male and female Green Mandarins can be difficult, though males often have a more elongated first dorsal spine. Breeding in captivity is challenging but has been achieved in dedicated systems. The Green Mandarin’s diet is specialized and consists almost exclusively of live copepods and amphipods. They are notoriously difficult to transition to prepared foods, making a thriving population of live prey in the aquarium crucial for their survival. Supplemental feeding with live brine shrimp or enriched frozen foods may be attempted, but success is not guaranteed.
