Description

The Maculiceps Tang, *Acanthurus maculiceps*, also known as the Spotted-face Tang or White-freckled Surgeonfish, is a striking addition to the larger marine aquarium. Its body is primarily a deep brown to black, adorned with numerous small, pale spots that are particularly concentrated on the head, giving it its common name. The dorsal and anal fins are edged in a vibrant blue, and the caudal fin (tail) is often a contrasting yellow or white.

A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate its potential adult size. This species can reach up to 16 inches in the wild, though they typically remain smaller in captivity, often growing to around 10-12 inches. A well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places is essential for their well-being. While generally peaceful towards most tank mates, they can be territorial with other tangs, especially those of similar size or shape. Introducing them as the last fish in the tank can help minimize aggression.

The Maculiceps Tang is primarily a herbivore, and a significant portion of its diet should consist of marine algae. Offer dried seaweed (nori) attached to a rock or clip multiple times a week. They will also graze on algae growing on live rock. Supplement their diet with high-quality marine pellets and flakes, as well as occasional offerings of mysis shrimp or other meaty foods. A varied diet is crucial for maintaining their health and vibrant coloration.

This species is not typically bred in captivity. There are no readily apparent visual differences between males and females.
