Description

The Melanurus Wrasse, *Halichoeres melanurus*, is a vibrant and active addition to the home aquarium, known for its striking coloration and engaging personality. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species displays a beautiful pattern of green and pinkish-orange stripes that run horizontally along its body, with a distinctive black spot on the caudal fin (tail) that gives it its common name.

A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and accommodate its active nature. The Melanurus Wrasse is considered a beginner-friendly species due to its hardiness and adaptability to aquarium life. It is generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of other non-aggressive marine fish. Provide a sandy substrate as they will bury themselves at night or when startled.

In the aquarium, the Melanurus Wrasse will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality marine flake food, pellet food, frozen mysis shrimp, and enriched brine shrimp. They are also known to help control populations of unwanted invertebrates like pyramid snails and bristle worms, making them a beneficial addition to a reef tank. They typically reach a maximum size of around 5 inches in captivity.
