Description

The Ornate Leopard Wrasse, *Macropharyngodon ornatus*, is a stunning and active addition to a mature marine aquarium. Its intricate pattern of spots and lines across a vibrant body makes it a captivating focal point. These wrasses are known for their constant foraging behavior, sifting through the substrate in search of small invertebrates.

A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and a deep sand bed for burrowing at night or when startled. The Ornate Leopard Wrasse is native to the Indo-Pacific region and is considered to have an intermediate care level. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial with other wrasses, especially those of similar size and shape. They are reef-safe with caution, as they may occasionally nip at certain invertebrates.

In the aquarium, the Ornate Leopard Wrasse should be offered a varied diet of small, meaty foods such as enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are beneficial to support their active metabolism. A secure lid is essential as these wrasses are known jumpers. They typically reach a maximum size of around 5 inches in captivity.
