Description

The Passer Angelfish (Holacanthus passer), also called the King Angelfish, is a bold Eastern Pacific showpiece with a deep blue body, bright orange pectorals, and a vivid white vertical bar behind the gill plate. Juveniles wear high-contrast black, white, and orange bands that gradually transition into the regal adult palette, so you enjoy a dramatic color journey as it matures. Confident and territorial, the Passer makes a commanding centerpiece and is best kept as the star of the display rather than in pairs with similar angels.

Care Requirements

Expect an adult size around 12–14″ and plan for 180–220+ gallons long-term. Set up aquarium with open swim lanes and substantial, established live rock for grazing and shelter. Keep parameters stable (76–80°F, 1.024–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, alkalinity 8–11 dKH, low nitrate/phosphate) with strong aeration and efficient skimming. This species is not reef-safe and will readily nip LPS, zoanthids, and clam mantles; choose robust tankmates and introduce it last when possible.

Diet & Feeding

Diet drives color and attitude: make angelfish formulas containing marine sponge the staple, then rotate mysis, chopped shrimp and clam, squid, and high-quality marine pellets. Add plant matter—nori and spirulina—several times per week. Feed juveniles and new additions 2–3 small meals daily, then maintain at least twice daily for adults. Vitamin enrichment helps appetite and immune health. With consistent feeding and stable water, the Passer Angel delivers daily “wow” in a FOWLR or carefully curated display.
