Description

  1. The Possum Wrasse, *Wetmorella nigropinnata*, is a small, secretive wrasse that is a fascinating addition to a peaceful reef aquarium. Its body is typically a mottled brown or reddish-brown with darker spots and lines, providing excellent camouflage amongst live rock. A distinguishing feature is the black spot with a white ring on the dorsal fin, resembling an eye.

A minimum aquarium size of 20 gallons is recommended for a single Possum Wrasse. Provide plenty of live rock with numerous caves and crevices for hiding, as this species is quite shy and will spend much of its time concealed. A sand bed is also beneficial as they may occasionally bury themselves. They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping them with larger, boisterous tank mates that may intimidate them.

The Possum Wrasse is a carnivore and will readily accept a varied diet of small meaty foods. Offer high-quality frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped marine fish or shrimp. They may also pick at small invertebrates in the live rock.

In the aquarium, the Possum Wrasse typically reaches a maximum size of around 3 inches. They are not known to be reef-safe and may nip at small invertebrates, including ornamental shrimp and snails. Breeding in captivity is not well documented. There are no readily apparent visual differences between males and females.
