The Red Mandarin Goby, *Synchiropus splendidus*, is a captivating and highly sought-after fish known for its vibrant and intricate coloration. Its body is a mesmerizing tapestry of electric blue, orange, and green, with swirling patterns that make each individual unique.
A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a single Red Mandarin, with larger tanks preferred for pairs or if housing with other peaceful fish. A mature aquarium with a substantial amount of live rock is essential, as the Mandarin Goby primarily feeds on copepods and amphipods that inhabit the rockwork. A refugium can be beneficial to help maintain a healthy population of these microcrustaceans. They are peaceful and shy, making them suitable for reef aquariums with docile tankmates. However, they are not competitive eaters and should not be housed with aggressive or fast-feeding fish.
Distinguishing between males and females can be difficult, but males often have a more elongated first dorsal spine. Breeding in captivity is challenging but has been achieved in dedicated setups. The Red Mandarin Goby’s diet is specialized and consists almost entirely of live copepods and amphipods. While some individuals may eventually accept frozen or prepared foods, a consistent and abundant supply of live prey is crucial for their long-term health and survival. They typically reach a size of about 3 inches in the aquarium.
