Description

The Regal Angelfish, *Pygoplites diacanthus*, is a truly majestic and highly sought-after marine fish, instantly recognizable by its striking pattern of alternating blue and yellow-orange vertical stripes outlined in black. Its dorsal and anal fins are often edged in bright blue, and the tail fin is typically yellow.

A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for the Regal Angelfish to provide ample swimming space and a stable environment. A mature aquarium with plenty of live rock is essential, as they require numerous hiding places and will graze on algae and small invertebrates found on the rockwork. While some individuals may be reef-safe, the Regal Angelfish is known to nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates) and clam mantles, making them a risk in a reef aquarium.

The Regal Angelfish is hermaphroditic, with no readily apparent visual differences between males and females. Breeding in captivity is extremely difficult. Their diet should be varied and include Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods. They can be finicky eaters initially and may require target feeding to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition. They can grow up to 10 inches in length in a home aquarium.
