The Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is pure elegance—radiant gold, cobalt, and ivory bands framed by a sapphire tail and an amber face mask. Each movement feels deliberate and regal, making this species a natural focal point in any display. Juveniles show tighter banding with a softer glow that deepens as they mature, while adults develop crisp, high-contrast stripes and that unmistakable “royal” presence. Originating from the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea, the Regal Angel is admired by collectors for its refined demeanor and graceful, unhurried swimming style around rockwork and arches. Choose a single showcase fish or pair its beauty with calm, respectful tankmates to let its color and poise shine.
The Regal Angelfish, reaching ~9–10″, does best in 180+ gallon aquariums with mature live rock, caves, and calm retreats. Keep parameters steady—76–80°F, 1.024–1.026 SG, pH 8.1–8.4, alkalinity 8–11 dKH, nitrate <20 ppm, phosphate <0.1 ppm—with moderate, varied flow and calmer pockets. Peaceful to mildly shy, it does best with calm tankmates; house with other large angels only in very large aquariums and add carefully.
The Regal Angelfish is reef-safe with caution—well-fed Regals often ignore SPS but may sample fleshy LPS, zoanthids, and clams. Diet is the key to success: offer small, frequent feedings centered on angelfish formulas containing marine sponge, plus mysis, finely chopped clam/shrimp, spirulina, quality pellets, and occasional nori. Start with 2–3 feedings daily (especially for new or smaller fish), then maintain at least 2/day. Dimmer lighting and a quiet feeding zone help finicky individuals settle and eat consistently.
