The Rusty Angelfish, *Centropyge ferrugata*, is a captivating dwarf angelfish known for its warm, reddish-brown body coloration. This species typically displays a subtle pattern of darker vertical bars or spots, adding to its visual appeal. The fins are often edged in a contrasting color, such as blue or purple, providing a delicate highlight.
A minimum aquarium size of 50 gallons is recommended for the Rusty Angelfish, providing ample space for swimming and exploration. A well-established tank with plenty of live rock is essential, offering numerous hiding places and grazing opportunities. While generally considered one of the more reef-safe dwarf angelfish, there is still a possibility they may nip at certain corals or clam mantles, particularly if not well-fed. Therefore, caution is advised in a mixed reef environment.
The Rusty Angelfish is hermaphroditic, with no readily apparent visual differences between males and females. Breeding in a home aquarium is considered very difficult. Their diet should consist of a varied mix including Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, and frozen or mysis shrimp. In a home aquarium, they typically reach a size of around 3-4 inches.
