Sea robins are distinctive, bottom-dwelling marine fish known for their broad, armored heads, wing-like pectoral fins, and unusual “walking” behavior. These fins are often brightly colored and can be spread wide, giving the sea robin an eye-catching appearance as it moves along sandy or muddy substrates. Native to coastal waters of the Atlantic, sea robins are hardy, curious fish that spend most of their time exploring the seafloor in search of food, using modified fin rays to feel and probe the sand.
Sea robins do best in larger marine aquariums with ample open bottom space and a soft sand substrate that allows them to forage naturally. A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended, with stable water parameters, strong filtration, and good oxygenation. They are generally peaceful but may eat very small tankmates, so they are best housed with medium to larger, non-aggressive fish. Rockwork should be minimal and securely placed, as sea robins prefer room to roam rather than tight hiding spaces.
In the wild, sea robins are carnivorous and feed primarily on small crustaceans, worms, and other benthic invertebrates. In captivity, they readily accept meaty foods such as shrimp, krill, clam, squid, and high-quality frozen carnivore blends. Feeding should occur once or twice daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom where the sea robin can easily locate it. A varied diet helps maintain proper nutrition, coloration, and overall health.
