Description

The Shepard’s Angelfish (Centropyge shepardi) is a rare and captivating dwarf angelfish species known for its warm orange coloration blended with violet to bluish hues along the fins and upper body. This species is less commonly seen in the trade, making it a prized addition for collectors.

Peaceful when young, it can become territorial toward other dwarf angelfish as it matures. Its compact size and striking color make it an ideal showpiece for established reef systems — provided coral compatibility is monitored.

Care Requirements

Provide a well-established aquarium (70+ gallons) with ample live rock for grazing and hiding spaces. Shepard’s Angelfish appreciate a mature environment with microalgae growth and stable water conditions.

Maintain temperature between 74–80°F, pH 8.1–8.4, and strong but indirect water flow. Avoid housing with other Centropyge species unless the tank is very large.

This species adapts well to captive life when provided a mixed diet and hiding areas to feel secure.

Diet & Feeding
  • Shepard’s Angelfish are omnivores with a preference for marine algae and sponge-based foods. Offer:

    Spirulina flakes or pellets

  • Nori sheets and marine algae
  • Frozen mysis and brine shrimp
  • Angelfish specialty foods containing sponge material

Feed small portions 2–3 times daily to maintain coloration and health.
