The Sixline Wrasse, *Pseudocheilinus hexataenia*, is a vibrant and active addition to any reef aquarium. Its common name comes from the six distinct horizontal blue lines that run along its reddish-orange body. This small but energetic fish is a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists due to its hardiness and beneficial behaviors.
A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for the Sixline Wrasse. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, they are typically found in rocky areas and coral reefs. In the home aquarium, they appreciate plenty of live rock with crevices and hiding places to explore and retreat into. They are known for their industrious nature, constantly patrolling the live rock for small invertebrates and parasites, making them a valuable member of a clean-up crew.
The Sixline Wrasse is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other small, similarly shaped fish, especially other wrasses. It is best kept as the only wrasse of its kind in the aquarium. They are carnivores and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality marine flake food, pellet food, frozen mysis shrimp, and enriched brine shrimp. Their active foraging behavior also helps control populations of unwanted pests like pyramid snails and flatworms. They typically reach a maximum size of around 3 inches. The Sixline Wrasse is considered a beginner-level fish due to its adaptability and resilience in a well-maintained aquarium.
