The Wide Bar Amphiprion latezonatus Clownfish, also known as the Wideband Anemonefish, is a striking and robust species of clownfish. It is characterized by its deep black body with two broad, vertical white bands. The anterior band is located just behind the eye, and the posterior band is near the tail. The fins are typically edged in white or yellow.
In the home aquarium, the Wide Bar Clownfish can reach a size of up to 5 inches. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with larger tanks preferred for pairs or groups. They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially when hosting an anemone.
Like other clownfish, the Wide Bar Clownfish is an omnivore. Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood, as well as high-quality marine flake and pellet foods. They will also benefit from the inclusion of marine algae or spirulina in their diet.
The Wide Bar Clownfish is a protandrous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals are born male and can transition to female later in life. They are relatively easy to breed in captivity, and successful spawning has been documented in home aquariums. There are no readily apparent visual differences between males and females.
While they can be kept without an anemone, the Wide Bar Clownfish will readily host a variety of anemone species, including the Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) and the Sebae Anemone (Heteractis crispa). Providing a suitable host anemone can enhance their well-being and natural behaviors.
