Description

The Yellow Belly Hippo Tang is a stunning regional variation of the classic Paracanthurus hepatus, easily identified by its brilliant blue body, black markings, and vibrant yellow belly and tail. This variant is native to the Indian Ocean and is prized by collectors for its deeper coloration and unique contrast compared to the Pacific Blue Tang.

Playful, intelligent, and constantly active, this tang spends its day grazing on algae and darting around open swimming areas. Like all surgeonfish, it has sharp spines (“scalpels”) near the tail used for defense — handle with care.

Care Requirements

The Yellow Belly Hippo Tang requires a large, stable aquarium (180+ gallons) with plenty of open swimming space and live rock for grazing. This species is prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon), so a quarantine period and excellent water quality are essential.

Provide strong flow, consistent temperature (75–80°F), and ample oxygenation. Avoid sudden lighting or water chemistry changes, as tangs can stress easily.

Diet & Feeding

Feed a varied diet to maintain color and health:

  • Dried nori (seaweed) on clips (daily)
  • Spirulina-based pellets or flakes
  • Marine algae sheets and macroalgae

Occasional mysis or brine shrimp for protein variety
